I learned a new phrase in the Combining Food Chart... Food Transit Time. I definitely have observed it... and was told that ginger and papaya have digestive enzymes that must have an affect on transit time!! Love it!

Since our Gastroenterologist and PCP won't help us, we might have to go to an ENT to find out how to help soothe his throat (other than laser surgery!).
Foods are weird... they can be acidic on the table but by the time they get digested they aren't (I was just told that). Complicating this, is when you don't have a stomach which point does this acid change occur?
If your mouth has sores I would think citrus and concentrated tomato/spaghetti sauce would be irritating.
What about pineapple?
I was told applesauce is acidic. I thought apples and peaches are fairly easy to digest. (on babies early foods list) but don't know about the acid level. Is there a difference if it is fresh, cooked, highly processed or canned?
He mentioned that TGIFriday put pepper in their alfredo sauce. He is a hypertaster and never uses pepper! I told him pepper was good for digestion. I didn't get a response! Ha! We all know we can feel the heat from pepper, cayenne and chili's. There is a digestive component that I'd really like to know more about. Maybe if I use white pepper he won't notice... maybe I could grow an albino green pepper. He doesn't like those either! Boo. I am gonna get sneakier.

I comfort beds and Barrett's Syndrome
I went to the Dump with a friend and we tried out the split king beds. They had about 5 different kinds and I liked the first one we tried that had a cool top... the second hardest. The wonderful salesman noticed I was wearing a livestrong bracelet and when I said we needed an adjustable bed for medical reasons. (He said he was a five year survivor of lung cancer, so we bonded a little) Anyway, he asked if I had heard of a zero gravity bed, I hadn't. Icomfort calls the beds where the feet come up a zero gravity feature. I really liked it and with the head up and feet up, I didn't slip down, didn't feel like I needed to roll over though I was encouraged to roll to my side and that was good too. I felt like I ddn't need the pillow between my knees to get comfortable. Now to drag him to the store to check them out. They have a California King split bed that is four inches longer and four inches narrower... that might be good for someone with a long torso. It's interesting how when the head comes up (with a remote of course) the mattress appears to extend beyond the base. (Not so on the Ikea bed's we have)
By having elevated feet, I think one would not slip down like he does in his La-z-boy chair. And that is not a good thing if you are trying to keep gastric juices out of your esophagus so you don't get Barrett's syndrome. His gastroenterologist says he has it, that's why his throat is sore.
So Dr. Weil of Tuscon is the only person who gives some suggestions to help,

- Licorice, camomile, aloe (Celestial seasoning's carry throat tea with these ingredientts
- DGL Deglycyrrhinizinated Licorice (bought it at Sunflower)

Flexible Choices
When it isn't fun to eat, sometimes given the choices is a good thing.
Yesterday, I went to Target and they had TGI Friday's one person frozen meals, (on clearance, get tm while you can) and I bought the pasta chicken broccoli alfredo of course. 450 calories, 57 g carbs and 26 grams of protein. He ate it all! The alfredo sauce was decent, better than the off shelf sauces. Clearance price about $2.50.
Another Target deal was there Archer Farms Mini burgers 2 four packs for $5. I bought the triple cheese angus burgers (255 calories, 14.5 grams protein and 26 grams carbohydrates) and the chicken Club with bacon and sharp cheddar cheese (170 calories, 10 grams protein and 15.5 grams of carbohydrates). Of course the serving size was 2... so double the calories etc. I tried the beef, and they were very good considering they came out of the microwave. They are really small so the fun to finish-it-factor is high! There is another mini burger... I don't remember what it was.

Fortified oatmeal recipes to go
Our wonderful nutritionist recommended a fortified oatmeal to eat at work for SECOND BREAKFAST. So I made up a mix using quick oats, powdered milk, craisins, brown sugar (I make my own out of white sugar and molasses), and walnuts.
I ground it all up and put it in a baggie and it get's mixed and nuked at work!
I found several variations for this fortified oatmeal and am going back to find out what the calorie/protein count is....
Mayo Clinic's Cranberry Walnut Oatmeal http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/healthy-recipes/RE00035
215 Calories, 40 carbs, 6 gm protein and four servings. I use a scoop from the protein powder, about 1/3 cup to portion it out. I will have to figure out if I'm overfeeding...He says it takes him a long time. I told him one hour per meal is enough! 5 Minutes between bites is INSANE!
